The Don Henry and Air Squadron Trophies - 2014

Contest Director's Report
Solstice Weekend in Wiltshire. Hmmm. BAeA Contest weekend in Wiltshire. More Hmmm. Bound to add up to low cloud and pouring rain. But NO! At some stage, the Law of Averages has to give us a good run at some better weather; so it proved at Compton Abbas. There's no finer aerodrome in England when the skies are blue and the wind is light (so they say). Earlier in the week, it had seemed that we might not have a field for the Air Squadron trophy, but I guess the forecast tempted a few more to join the lists.

Two things (amongst plenty of others!) should be borne in mind by a CD. Firstly, competitions are arranged for the benefit of competing pilots. Secondly, one must be prepared to be flexible in order to provide the best overall opportunity for a fair result. Accordingly, it was agreed during the initial briefing at noon on the Friday that two rounds of the Advanced would be flown that afternoon, along with the lone Beginner, enabling a less rushed Order of Programme to be re-organised for the Saturday.

A
slight delay ensued whilst some of those giving support arrived, having been trapped in the Solstice traffic; round one of Advanced was then flown off without any particular issues. Unfortunately, it was not possible to complete the second round before the aerodrome 1800 local curfew. This meant that the remaining pilots had to fly their Free the following morning.

The impact of this was that (a) those pilots that had already flown had the benefit of overnight study of the unknown and (b) a potential change of direction of flight meant that the pilots who had yet to fly their free would have had their preparations for it compromised. These pilots were therefore offered the choice of flight direction.

Thus the remaining free
programme was flown off. This was followed by the first outing for the Intermediate pilots, then the Unknown for Advanced, enabling a full series of flights for the Don Henry trophy to be completed just after lunch. This set the stage for the 'Grande Finale' the - Intermediate Apprentices. This is special in many ways. Firstly, Apprentices (and the Advanced Masters) was conceived to enable pilots who had been used to the strictures of formal competition aerobatics to explore flight construction where marks are awarded for artistic impression, as well as framing and technical merit. These marks are constructive rather than destructive, as is the case with our other competitions. Finally, as smoke is allowed, it enabled the spectators to enjoy a slightly more 'airshow' feel to the final flights of the day. We are grateful to the members of the Air Squadron, who turned out in force and who awarded cash prizes to the top 3 pilots. Marcus of the Air Squadron graciously agreed to hand out the medals and trophies in the awards ceremony conducted 'al fresco' in front of the Compton Abbas crowd.

Our continued success with our domestic competitions relies entirely on the enthusiasm of the competing pilots and the efforts of unpaid volunteers, in a symbiotic relationship. Unfortunately, sometimes the public thanks that is the only reward that we have to offer isn't always expressed in a way that gives satisfaction. I can only apologise to anyone who feels 'left out' by a sin of omission or a system that cannot have sufficient capacity to give thanks to everyone.
