The Fenland and McAully Trophies - 2014

CD's Report
Fenland airfield is one of the nicest venues for our aerobatic contests. Very easy going with a nice café and staff, we are always made very welcome. The Box however poses its own set of unique problems to pilots. It’s a grass airfield in a landscape of green fields with the box aligned at a very misleading 20 or so degrees to the north and south sides of the neat parallel fields. I’m sure that every BAeA aerobatic pilot will have competed at Fenland at sometime in their past and everyone has had difficulties finding the box. But that’s all part of its challenge, it’s the same for everyone, so a level, if challenging, playing field.

John Scott, the winner of the Intermediate trophy provided the best quote of the weekend "I was looking so hard I couldn't see anything!". This was in the context of being upside down, couldn't see the judges, couldn't see the airfield, totally lost …. and he still managed to win.

All the intermediate pilots managed to arrive on Friday for the 1.00pm start. The forecast wasn’t good, the Met office warning of extensive thunderstorms across the country with high humidity and temperatures in the 30's, even advising people not to go out in the midday sun and issuing severe weather warnings. There were lines of thunderstorms travelling up the middle of the country and up the East coast. Fenland sat in between these and was fortunate to have a 4000ft plus cloud-base and good weather apart from a strange wind that was 5kts on the ground increasing to 30kts at 5,000 ft.

So, we started promptly, rattling through the intermediate Known and Free programmes by 4pm. Some competitors got caught out by the strong wind at altitude, which pushed them to the back of the box, others by the challenging box, and one was caught out by both.

John Scott took the lead in the Intermediate known and then held onto it in the Free, and we all retired for the day - hot and bothered (it had reached 32 degrees) with John just ahead of Chris Sills.

The Saturday weather was forecast to be worse than Friday with thunderstorms and rain. Luckily we had kept to the 8.00am Standard level brief and this allowed us to take advantage of the early good weather to get the their part of the contest underway. In the Known-plus-three McAully sequence it was Alex in the team KITI Pitts who took the lead. There was some good flying with the top five pilots, including newcomer Dave Munro all scoring over 70%.

After a 1hr lie-in the intermediate pilots arrived to strut their stuff with their first Unknown. Chris Sills managed to wrestle this one away from the leader John Scott who still managed an impressive 77.8% despite a HZ and a break. Then it was back to the Standard pilots and Marc Amey took this sequence, but once again the Team KITI boys Alex and Aidan were snapping at his heels and able to hold on to first and second place overall.

Back to the final Intermediate sequence, with John Scott holding a 80 point lead over Chris Sills. John was sacrificing everything he could find to the rain gods and Chris was working just as hard with the sun gods. It was a tricky 2nd unknown with quite a lot of negative G mixed with some quite technical figures. A real “sort the men from the boys” sequence (or “ladies from the girls” if there had been any).

Well it wasn’t to be, at 12.00 the promised rain started, then a thunderstorm hit and low cloud developed, and with only 2,100ft at 4.30 we finally called it a day. John Scott took the intermediate trophy home and Alex Cartwright won the magnificent McAully trophy, which was first award in 1962.

Many thanks to all the judges and their assistants who roasted in the sun and dodged thunderstorms for two days. Thanks must also go to Ray in the tower and Katie in the café, who help to make Fenland such a pleasant place.
