KITI has fun in the sun
At
the conclusion of a competition there is no more gratifying
experience than to be approached by a succession of departing pilots
telling you what a great day they have had. Usually the ones with
the medals are first in line, but the real acid test is when each
and every one of the Beginners’ entrants looks you in the eye, pumps
your hand and mustering their best Austro-Californian accent
pronounces: ”I’ll be back !”
Attracting new people into our sport is a perennial issue.
Attracting seasoned competitors back to Sleap is far less of a
challenge. With the secret hangar full of wonderful sunshine, super
helpful team and beautifully kept airfield, most pilots seem to find
this an easy destination to put in the calendar. Of course, it does
have its little trap for the unwary, more of which in due course.
The later briefing time of 09.30 makes for a civilised and leisurely
start, but also chews a whole chunk out of the morning’s flying.
Faced with rare perfect weather conditions – even the wind was
forecast exactly on the A axis all the way up to FL240 – getting the
Advanced Free rolling was the priority. Ian assisted by assembling
an
excellent team of judges, callers and assistants and David
Thomson opened the scoring with a tidy and nicely positioned display
in the Team Finland Cap 232.
Exemplary flying was the order of the day, both in discipline and in
style. After Round 1 half the Advanced competitors were still in
medal contention and most of their scores were around 80%. There
were a number of 10’s for positioning and the Chief Judge’s comment
that he hadn’t deemed a single penalty necessary was testament to
the standard of the competition. Not wanting to be outdone KITI 2,
Aidan, kicked off the Standard Known with a similar high scoring
flight, closely followed by KITI 1, Alex, then KITI 3, Bob, (flying
the Slingsby) and KITI ‘Head of Critique’, Antoine, also in the
local T67. KITI 4 remained entirely neutral (except for a wry little
smile).
The secret to making the Beginner’s event an enjoyable experience is
to remove as much pressure as possible from the competitors and to
remind them repeatedly that they take such time as they need to
complete their first outing in the box. Five flew, all heeded the
advice and as a consequence all put on a good show, even if the
Sleap runway trap did manage one more victim to add to its
illustrious roll call. Nice to see David Farley’s Skybolt emerge
with bragging rights. I am sure I saw some nostalgically moist
hotelier eyes on the judging line, but that could just have been
stray sun tan lotion.
Time for the showdown. A great little Unknown from the Stephen Madle
pen (I am told) had technical elements, energy management and
positional challenges in abundance and duly sorted the pack.
Favourite moment was our plastic pig driver and everyone’s mentor
almost avoiding the runway confusion was some xtremely neat footwork.
Still good enough for Bronze, with Phil’s excellent Unknown not
quite sufficient to outwit a classy
afternoon’s flying from Paul
Tomlinson, making a welcome return to the gold medal position and
the Duxford Trophy.
At Standard a gnat’s whisker around 84% in Unknown raw scores
separated Aidan and Alex, Aidan taking victory on the back of his
slightly better Known, with Jonathan wazzing his way to Bronze. So
the Golding-Barrett trophy stays at Sleap, the KITIs cheered on by
an excellent home crowd. Sadly, Veryan G-B was not well enough to
attend and present the trophy this year, but was ably represented by
Jen at the prize giving. Veryan, you are in our thoughts. |
