The Nigel Newbold and Icicle Trophies - 2014

Contest Directors Report
The UK Aerobatic calendar has a number of wonderful venues – flying “jewels” with great people, great facilities and a great atmosphere. Today, I was privileged to visit Sandtoft for the first time and, once again, found myself at an amazing airfield where support for us could not have been better; and the welcome could not have been warmer.

So having quickly acclimatised to the fantastic Sandtoft, the (ex) competitive glider pilot in me found a golden rule springing front of mind: if it’s showery, start early. And, with the risk of rain and showers forecast, that’s what we did. After a briefing at 0930, Cas Smith took off at 1030 sharp to get the Advanced show on the road.

A professional bunch of 8 Advanced pilots steadily streamed off to do their stuff in almost processional form, followed immediately by our five Intermediate pilots. So by just after 1230, both classes had flown their first unknown.

In the Advanced class, the two One Designs of Phil Burgess and David Kean headed the field, chased by Chris Brook flying his first Advanced comp in a CAP231. In the Intermediates, Chris Sills in a Laser led from Mike Collett – in his first ever aerobatic comp! – and Paul Elvidge showing us again how he can make his Slingsby go.

A sixth sense told me just to keep going whilst the sun shone. We fed and watered our hardy bunch of judges and assistants quite literally “in the field” before starting over again for Unknown 2 at 1300. A minor pause for a little strato cu to burn off and then the professional procession metronomically worked its way through the second unknowns in increasing sunshine – and, on occasions, increasing wind.

So, at 1545 all the flights were done. The West now looked gloomy with rain visible on the horizon and so we moved swiftly to extend well-deserved thanks and make the awards of trophies and medals at 1610 to allow our pilots to fly (or drive) home for tea before the rain arrived.

In the Intermediates, Chris won the Nigel Newbold trophy, followed by Paul and Mike - medalling his first comp. The Advanced saw the two One Designs in the Top 3 – Phil Burgess scoring an outstanding 80.17% to win the Icicle Trophy. But slipping between the 107’s was Chris Brook in the CAP231, taking a Silver medal at his first Advanced comp at a smidgin less than 70%.

So a great day was had by all. But it would not have been so had it not been for the wonderful team at Sandtoft led by Mark Watkin – who, amongst many other things, put in superb work liaising with Doncaster Robin Hood airport to let us have access to their airspace to hold the comp. Thank you Doncaster. And, finally, a huge thank you to Nick and the team of judges and assistants whose collective selflessness and commitment saw them sitting on the line from 1030 to 1545 straight; and, of course, to Jen our scorer who just makes things happen so well with a huge smile and no fuss.

Wonderful!
