CD's Report
With many years history of hosting aerobatic contests, you know
Conington is going to be a smooth operation. The Nationals have been
here as long as I can remember, which is over 15 years. The
operation, lead by Julie
Churchill and
her team, is friendly, spacious and no hassle, and of course you
never go hungry thanks to Sarah.
Day 1: Thursday morning brief was set at a leisurely time of 10:00,
which was a bonus for those who flew in the night before and still
gave some of the competitors time to fly in on the day and even
return home to pick up their pilots licence (no names no pack
drill). The entry list was lower than most years with only 15 in
total, 6 of which were at Standard level. In 2002 we had a whopping 37
competitors at Standard so a cut was required for the second
unknown. No such worries this year.
The Wx was looking favourable,
with warm 15kt westerly’s and a southerly judging point all day. Brian had a team of 6 judges to pick out the best flying and so it
was, by 11:00, Mike Collett launched in the Extra 230 sizing up the
box for the start of the comp. All 15 pilots had flown in time for a
lunch break and a chance for the judges to get out of the heat and
sun. We could see conditions were on our side to complete the first
two programs for Standard and Intermediate on day one, and still time for a wash up
and glad rags before going out to dinner.
Day2: Despite the great progress on the previous day we didn’t take
any chances with a late start and stuck with the 8;00 brief.
Wx conditions were looking unstable with fronts, occlusions and all
sorts coming in from the west and possible rain at 1300z. We
launched the first Standard pilot at 9:00 and as luck would have it the
wind dummy was Dave Slater, who arrived late to briefing
thanks to
his driver (where did you leave your wallet Howarth?). We whizzed
through Standard but as Richard Welch positioned for the 5th Intermediate flight
at 11:00 cloud stopped play with 2,000ft scud floating into the box.
We downed tools and hoped the milky sky would let enough sun through
to warm the damp ground, and sure enough by 12:15 2,800ft was reported
and up they went. Even though we were making good progress we
pressed on with the flying, streaming straight into the Standard 3rd Unknown
and completing all their flying by 2:00 which only left the 9 Intermediate
pilots to fly. Lunch for the judges seemed a reasonable plan and
well-earned break at that stage, particularly as the forecast rain
didn’t seem to be coming despite reports of heavy rain at Membury
Services on the M4.
Despite all the simplicity of everything running so smoothly there
was some excitement amongst the
competitors closely watching the %
points between 1st and 2nd and then 3rd and 4th. Charlie and Mike
danced between the top spot over the first 3 flights leaving
everything to play for on the last flight. After a short lunch break the
judging team were back on station and by 4:00 it was all over. Pam
Arthur and her grand-son came to present the trophies, concluding the
day on high note, and we still had a day in hand which must be a
first.
Could I return my family weekend pass (pink ticket) and choose
another Saturday? No - non-refundable due to family already being
away on holiday. Use
them or lose them. Sadly this did mean the
curry house had rather less people that evening but no doubt all
those who flew home early enjoyed the bonus day.
All in all a great couple of days. The competitors were slick,
organised and well behaved in all aspects. Little to no technical
issues and no scares from box incursions. Let’s hope we can
encourage a few more Standard pilots next year.
