Contest Directors Report
It
is probably true to say that most, if not all, outdoor activities
are dependent on the prevailing weather, but,
together
with sailing, aviation is
particularly sensitive to meteorology.
Adverse conditions for the forthcoming contest at Breighton were
forecast several days before, and proved accurate and well-founded.
Historically this would have meant that pilots positioned the day
before, but even that was unviable. Thus we had a preliminary list
of up to 18 pilots planning to transit on Saturday morning. It is
bad enough when a competition is interrupted by weather, but when
such weather prevents pilots from even reaching the venue, it is
very frustrating. Consequently, the list of 18 was decimated to
five, resulting in the unusual statistic that there were more judges
than pilots!
Having waited for both flyable weather and determined pilots, the
oft-deferred briefing was eventually convened at 1345, and the
first
flight sharp on 1430.
Surprisingly, the weather remained fair,
facilitating non-stop progression. Conversely, the low entry meant
that pilots’ breaks between flight s were short, but sportingly all
co-operated, so that by 1800 all 5 pilots had each completed all
three flights.
At Advanced, Phil and Ron alternated between first and second, but
notwithstanding an unfortunate final flight by Phil, he prevailed to
win with 70%. At Standard, Alex and David also alternated between
first and second place, but ultimately David succeeded, albeit with
a lead of less than one percentage point.
With
such few contestants, the rules had to be consulted to decide if
medals should be awarded to all, which they were. As sponsor of The
Cavendish Hotel Trophy, Contest Director and hotelier Eric Marsh
presented the John MacLean Trophy to David Brown, and the Cavendish
Hotel Trophy to – for the third time! – Phil Burgess.
Thanks are due to all who contributed to the success of the event,
particularly (as always) Nick and Jen Buckenham, the numerous judges
and assistants, Breighton personnel, and – of course – THE PILOTS! |
