The Tiger Trophy - 2014

CD's Report
Ever gambled? I have! Not that much, you understand, but enough to know that I’m not particularly good at it. However, I don’t think that even a competent gambler would have bet on us completing both sequences at this years Tiger event, given the weather we faced. Low cloud, drizzle, mist and fog, we had it all at some point, all being held beautifully in place by a huge high pressure area over the North Sea, which also gave us a gentle, moist airflow straight off the sea..!! Would you have taken that bet?

By the time the coffee machine was hot on Saturday morning, we had 2 aircraft, and they had arrived the day before. Then, just as our thoughts were turning towards bacon, the radio burst into life with the unmistakable Yorkshire accent of Tom Cassells who, despite the tops of the chimneys of the Drax power station still being in cloud, announced that he was joining downwind to land, and he was right. When he was told he was the only arrival so far, I’m sure he muttered something about 'soft southern ……….!!'

After several postponements of the first briefing, and a steady trickle of arrivals, we finally enjoyed Jen’s roll call at 1300hrs, by which time my mobile had lost most of its charge fielding communications with stuck pilots. No matter, we were underway, even if we still couldn’t fly. The surprise unknown, which was to be flown as the second flight, was, for standard and intermediate, a sequence of the same figures drawn in 3 different ways. Pilots were invited to choose which one they would fly, which they did straight after the briefing. They all chose the same one, but it was an interesting exercise which was constructive use of the non-flyable conditions.

By 1500hrs conditions were looking better so pilot one, last years’ winner David Brown, took off, flew through the box then landed again. Not good enough yet, but the judges stayed out on the line and after a quick squirt, yes tank and loo, DB was climbing the Extra 200 back into the box and BINGO, 3,300ft. The Tiger was up and running and finally caged by 1800hrs. Some flew well, some didn’t. Some flew low and some flew things that shouldn’t have been there at all, but we had us a result. The G-KITI boys have been trading places all season long but this was to be Aidan’s day with Alex runner up and Chris Sills bagging the bronze. Top 3 scores all north of 80% - job done!

Sunday dawned and the weather was up to its old tricks again, I won’t bore you with the details but after widely varying cloud base reports from local flyers and a months' worth of caffeine, the only way to know for sure was to launch rookie competitor David Heard to go and have a look and BINGO again, 3,000ft plus in the box. Nine competitors decided to contest the surprise unknown, and by 1500hrs we were ready to hand out the gongs. Combining the two flights saw my fellow Scot, David Brown climb up to bronze medal position, but it was the Sleap boys who cleaned up again with a one/two and also took the team trophy, along with Paul Elvidge in his first outing with his new toy with their superb team name ‘Team Special Edge’. Worth saying that at advanced, we only had wee Ron trying his hand at the ‘surprise’, which was the unknown used at the European Nationals in Sweden in 2003. A really tough sequence which Capt. Allan got round magnificently. A real privilege to watch, thanks Ron.

Thanks again to Nick B and his team of judges and assistants, the Sherburn Aero Club and their airfield manager Julia Lilywhite, who presented the awards, and of course Jen and Jack for driving the laptop. Me, I’m off to my local Paddy Power as I feel my luck might be changing…
