Dan Smith Memorial Trophy, 2024 results
Contest Director's Report
So lucky this time! Brilliant weather and good-humoured team effort made the job of CD an easy one. We had two K21s, two tugs and blue sky. Nine competitors flew Sports Known 2 in the morning and an unknown (actually "Known 1, but nobody had flown it...sneaky eh!) in the afternoon.
The competition flights fitted neatly into a busy day of club flying, thanks to some nice organisation by the duty team, led by Nicola (thank you so much, All)....until one glider went u/s with a flat tyre. No real problem, we carried on rather more slowly with just one and the final flight took off at about 7.0pm, in beautiful low sunshine.
The scores tell the story. The higher-level pilots Szymon, Neil and Dave Gethin were very close in contesting the medals and at an impressively high standard. The genuine Sports-level flyers kept us guessing right until the end, when a beautiful final flight by Elliott Cox took him right up from the lower ranks to fourth overall, winning him the lovely wooden Dan Smith Memorial Trophy. Very well done. The Gold went to Szymon Bartus for the second year running, with some lovely accurate flying. Closely followed by Neil for silver and Dave bronze. High scores.
Many thanks to the CJ Charles Baker, judge Paul Conran (come all the way from Ireland for the weekend!) and to Michael Corcoran and the competitors who scribed.
I was greatly assisted by Neil Oakley who prepared the judges' paperwork and processed the scores...thanks Neil.
It looks like we have a core of enthusiastic glider aerobatic pilots who have already achieved a good standard...onward and upward!
