Weather information and current NOTAMs
The sources of weather information here are from a variety of international data services. It is the legal duty of an aeroplane commander to secure appropriate advice regarding en-route weather prior to any flight.
NOTAMs & Flight Planning
- NOTAMS from National Air Traffic Services
- UK (EGTT and EGPX) FIR NOTAMs 48-Hour Warnings and Restrictions
- SPINE - The "Soaring Pilots Intelligent NOTAM Editor", from the BGA / JR Goodenough. Use this Windows application to select, fetch, edit, display and print NOTAM data from the AIS website
- Flight Plan FORM, Fill it in on-line, print it, fax it, get set ... go!
Weather
- MetWEB The UK Meteorological Office. UK TAF's and METAR's, F214 & 215 charts, surface pressure, AIRMET, global 5-day forecasts etc.. You will need to register at the first use (this is free)
- METARs Mobile
- Orbifly Here's the excellent weather page for a Swiss/French website Orbifly Flight School that provides pop-up Metars and TAF's over a map of the UK or Europe - quicker that Metweb for sure, and easy to use
- XC-Weather Much used by the glider fraternity, an excellent way to find the current wind, temperature, dew-point, visibility, pressure and general weather situation around Britain and France
- The BBC Weather Forcast Select "Coast and Sea" and then "Atlantic Pressure" for instance to get to a page which gives full colour / quick to load / 5 days worth / pressure synoptics / winds / summaries / temperatures etc
- Meteox A Netherlands web with excellent satellite based weather overlays to many European countries. You can also click their Google Earth link to transfer all this onto their global graphics for a much wider view
- SkyLink Weather A really informative site with excellent graphics, TAF's, METARS, Europe charts, and lots of other useful info. Linked to the SkyView Systems Weather Products shop with meteo etc
- Weather Underground Regional map for all major countries of the world with visibility, temperature, wind, humidity etc. and in many cases a 5-day forecast
- UK Weather Resources From the UK Weather Info website - a comprehensive listing of weather collections from around the UK
- The Weather Channel Domestic rather than aeronautical, however the link above gets you to a list of UK and European airports for a 10-day forecast. Very useful during the week before the competition!
- Météo France A really excellent site (in French.....) with satellite pictures and also forecasts of the expected chart for noon the next day, this link starting with the UK general weather
- Flight Route Calculator More for trip planning than weather, nevertheless a useful set of tools for planning down-route and pointers to associated weather sources
- Wetterzentrale A German language site but with many of the chargeable UK Met items available free. Click on Fax and you can print-out the same charts that our Bracknell based lovelies provide at 75p/minute
